At this year’s annual Australia National Conference, the ASIS Victoria Australia Chapter hosted 65 security professionals for a day of programming focused on the conference theme ‘Security in a Rapidly Changing World.’

The keynote presentation was jointly delivered by Skeeve Stevens and Shanti Korporaal, advisors and futurists who work with governments and multinational corporations. The session provided insights into contemporary thinking in the context of security-related risks, including discussion on emerging technologies and tactics—particularly, low-cost technology available online that can cause major disruption through terrorist events or other criminal activities.

Security risk management

Dr. Patrick Walsh followed with a presentation on Intelligence, Biosecurity, and Bioterrorism. Dr. Walsh highlighted some of the key points from his recent book to provide an understanding of emerging bio-threats and risks. He proposed how intelligence communities can better meet the challenges of emerging bio-threats—and how to better manage these potential risks.

Stephen Brass defined the capability differences between people and intelligent technologies

Stephen Brass defined the capability differences between people and intelligent technologies and why both mediums are required to provide effective security and safety management. Dr. Gavriel Schneider then gave an insightful presentation on the approaches of Enterprise Security Risk Management, exploring an integrated approach to security risk culture, risk management, and leadership.

Contemporary security issues

In the first afternoon session, Assistant Commissioner Ross Guenther of the Victoria Police Counter Terrorism Command explained some collaborative work across both the public and private sectors and the difficulties that agencies like the police face when combating risk. This session was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Tony Zalewski exploring contemporary security issues.

Panelists argued that operational competence and industry consistency are key issues that must be addressed. The Chapter wishes to thank conference sponsors Gunnebo, Inner Range, Davcor, and Dominance Guardian Services, as well as Master of Ceremonies John Deeks. Deeks’ media and television experience ensured delegates were informed and entertained.
