The Norwegian civil defence organisation “Sivilforsvaret” has started to modernise its nationwide public warning system with the help of Airbus Defence and Space and TC Connect AS. Both companies will provide Tetra-based TMD880i modems to more than 1,200 siren sites all over Norway, connecting the warning system to the national multi-agency public safety radiocommunications network Nodnett.

Integration of warning systems

The Norwegian Ministry of Justice decided to integrate the warning system into the Tetra-based Nodnett network because the warning system’s current technology is due to expire soon. TC Connect will deliver and install Airbus Defence and Space Tetra TMD880i data modules as part of the complete modernisation programme.

TC Connect played a key role in designing the cabinet for the control unit that is called “VRIO”. It combines the Tetra TMD880i modem with a Remote Terminal Unit. TC Connect has already successfully sold this interface to the Swedish market for several years. In addition, the company developed the programme’s software to satisfy customer requirements. Regular update services are included in the project’s scope. Installation began in autumn 2016 and will continue throughout 2017.

“Following our recent deliveries of handheld TH1n slimline radios to the healthcare sector and P8GR Tetra pagers to the firefighters, this is yet another good example of innovative solutions we are providing together with TC Connect to the Norwegian market”, said Anna Hyyrynen, Partner Sales & New Solutions Manager at Airbus Defence and Space.

Transference of data

Besides its ability to link the warning system to Nodnett, the TDM880i modem transfers high volumes of data to the Tetra network. It also tracks vehicles with GPS positioning in real time. The modem interface can be managed remotely, e.g. via smart grid or supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA).

Since 2008, TC Connect has been a business partner of Airbus Defence and Space. Headquartered in Oslo, with four additional offices around Norway, the distributor of Professional Mobile Radio technology provides solutions and services for various mission-critical needs, including several public safety authorities both in Norway and in Sweden.
