Abnormal Security has announced its placement on Fast Company’s prestigious annual list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies for 2021 for its breakthrough cloud-native email security platform that stops modern email attacks through behavioural data science.

The list honours the businesses that have not only found a way to be resilient in the past year, but also turned those challenges into impact-making processes.

Innovative, data science approach

Abnormal Security’s innovative, data science approach to stopping the world’s most sophisticated email attacks earned the company the No. 10 spot in the security category.

Email has long been the primary communication channel for business and amidst the world’s massive shift to remote and hybrid work, it also maintains its position as one of the most attractive attack vectors for threat actors.

Business Email Compromise (BEC) cyber-attacks

Business Email Compromise (BEC) is the greatest single cause in financial losses due to cybercrime

According to the FBI, Business Email Compromise (BEC) is the greatest single cause in financial losses due to cybercrime – more than US$ 26 billion in lost revenues. BEC attacks are hyper-targeted, socially-engineered and text-based, often sent from compromised employee or vendor email accounts.

Legacy secure email gateways (SEGs) miss BEC cyber-attacks, because they lack the typical threat intelligence signals, such as bad reputation, suspicious links or malicious attachments. According to Abnormal Security research, more than 70 percent of business email compromise attacks were not initially blocked by SEG solutions.

Abnormal platform leverages behavioural data science

Abnormal Security delivers a fundamentally different approach to stopping novel, sophisticated email attacks that were previously undetectable.

Through one-click API integration with Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, the Abnormal platform uniquely leverages behavioural data science to profile and baseline good behaviour, so as to detect anomalies and compromised accounts, and stop targeted email attacks.

Abnormal AI threat detection

The Abnormal AI threat detection engine models the identity of both employees and external senders

The Abnormal AI threat detection engine models the identity of both employees and external senders, creates relationship graphs, and analyses email content, in order to effectively stop targeted socially-engineered attacks.

Evan Reiser, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Co-Founder of Abnormal Security, said “At Abnormal, we are using AI to reinvent email security and stop the costliest and most advanced email attacks.

Abnormal Security’s API-based integration

Evan Reiser adds, “Our API-based integration provides access to 10x more data than other solutions and makes our AI threat detection engine the most effective at recognising abnormal behaviour, which is more important than memorising threat intelligence for stopping BEC attacks. Our inclusion on Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies list is a tremendous honour that validates our commitment to helping our customers solve their most challenging cyber security threats.

In a year of unprecedented challenges, the companies on this list exhibit fearlessness, ingenuity, and creativity in the face of crisis,” said Fast Company’s Deputy Editor David Lidsky, who oversaw the issue with Senior Editor, Amy Farley.
