The Alpro transom closers at Portsmouth were installed by Gosport-based DWP Glazing Systems
Alpro's access control systems also secure the University of Westminster

Alpro’s overhead transom closers are a means of hydraulically controlling the opening and closing of aluminium doors and can have light, medium or heavy spring strengths to suit type of usage, with a 90 degree hold-open option. The university is using the devices at its building entrances on Guildhall Walk.

Transom closers are well suited for use at universities and colleges since alternative options such as spring hinges and floor springs present problems in terms of lack of adjustment flexibility, which is crucial for a student population.

Keith Parry, Divisional Sales Manager at Alpro, said: “Transom overhead door closers are designed to be contained within the transom header bar of the door. The concealed operation lends itself to academia, especially in heritage areas such as Portsmouth, since the aesthetic appearance of doors is left uncompromised. Our educational portfolio is widening and Alpro electric bolt and strike plates are protecting the University of Westminster headquarters in Regent Street, London.”

The Alpro transom closers at Portsmouth were installed by Gosport-based DWP Glazing Systems, who are a leading manufacturer and integrator with a 25-year track record and prestigious portfolio in window and access control products. DWP use these closers extensively and their clients benefit from durability which has been tested independently at 250,000 double-action cycles to EN 1154. The university project was overseen by main contractor KKA Maintenance Ltd.

The Times has rated the University of Portsmouth as the fifth-best modern university in the UK. Its impressive alumni includes Turner Prize-winner Grayson Perry, astronaut Timothy Peake and BBC television presenter Ben Fogle. The current student population is over 21,000.
