Alpro’s overhead transom closers hydraulically control the opening and closing of aluminium doors

Exeter Chiefs, one of the UK’s leading rugby clubs, is using transom door closers from Alpro Architectural Hardware at its new 10,000-capacity Sandy Park stadium in Devon.

Alpro’s overhead transom closers are a means of hydraulically controlling the opening and closing of aluminium doors and can have light, medium or heavy spring strengths to suit type of usage, with a 90 degree hold-open option.

The rugby club is using the devices at main entrance points to the ground and for corporate boxes in its west stand, with facility managers benefitting from the ability to adjust the latching and closing force created by the hydraulic valve activity according to the weight and height of individual doors.

Transom closers are well suited for use at sports venues since alternative options such as spring hinges and floor springs present problems in terms of lack of adjustment flexibility and difficult installations into concrete floors.

Keith Parry, Divisional Sales Manager at Alpro, said: “Transom overhead door closers are designed to be contained within the transom header bar of the door. The concealed operation lends itself to sports venues and particularly sponsored areas since the aesthetic appearance of doors is left uncompromised. Once fitted, even the heaviest single or double-action aluminium doors will function continuously with minimal maintenance.”

The Alpro units were installed by Exmouth-based MPS Architectural Aluminium who are a leading commercial fabricator and supplier with a 20-year track record and prestigious portfolio. MPS use these closers extensively and their clients benefit from durability which has been tested independently at 250,000 double-action cycles to EN 1154.

The new Sandy Park rugby stadium was built at a cost of £15m with Dean & Dyball Construction Ltd acting as main contractor. At time of writing, the Exeter Chiefs are mid-table in the top tier of English rugby.
